People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Many find it a way of furthering their self-development and enriching their experiences. Others may want help with a specific area of their lives, or they may be experiencing a more general sense of stress, dissatisfaction, depression or confusion. This may be brought on by recent events or be part of a longer-term pattern. Counselling and psychotherapy are basically talking therapies which can take many forms. You may have been recommended to attend psychotherapy by a medical professional, but there are ways you can identify the benefits of attending counselling or therapy yourself.
Many of us will experience some form of anxiety or troubling times, even depression at some point in our lives. Everyone goes through times of extreme stress and emotional upheaval, following the loss of a loved one for instance or following retirement or divorce. Lots of people get through these situations on their own but equally lots of people benefit from extra help to overcome more serious long term reactions to situations which have caused them distress.
